Wesley Hawkins is the Founder and Director of The Nolita Project. This nonprofit organization provides mentorship, supportive relationships, classes, and community efforts to beautify neighborhoods and provide basic safety for the poor of Baltimore. He is also a kid from the hood, and proud single dad to Elijah – his biological brother, who he adopted after both of Elijah’s parents died of drug-related causes. Hawkins was born in Baltimore to a drug-addicted mother, whose addiction quickly destroyed their family. After spending time in foster care and being taught to read by extended family members at the age of 10, Hawkins went on to work as a prison guard, a trucker, and then to earn his Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice. He hopes that his unique perspective – as someone who was born into some of the most challenging circumstances imaginable, who has worked on both sides of the law, and who has been able to succeed in both business and academia – will bring a fresh perspective to his fellow kids from the hood, and to academics and lawmakers alike.
On April 4, 2025, Watkins Mill High School had the distinct pleasure of welcoming Mr. Wesley Hawkins as a guest speaker. His visit left a lasting impression on our students, and we are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and authenticity he brought to our community.
Mr. Hawkins’ presentation was nothing short of powerful. Students described it as “100% honest and real,” “riveting,” and “relatable to the audience no matter what situation you’re in.” His ability to connect with young people on such a genuine level is rare and deeply impactful. One student shared, “I liked him and I paid attention—and I read,” highlighting the motivational power of his presence and message.
What resonated most was Mr. Hawkins’ authenticity. His raw backstory, delivered with grace and strength, made him not only relatable but deeply respected. Students remarked on his character and clarity, calling him “well spoken,” “relatable,” and someone whose “relationship with the student was marvelous.”
Perhaps the most telling feedback of all came in the form of a simple request we heard again and again: “Can we bring him back again?”
We wholeheartedly echo that request. Mr. Hawkins’ visit sparked meaningful reflection, conversation, and connection—exactly the kind of impact we strive to cultivate in our school community. We enthusiastically recommend him to any school or organization looking to inspire and empower young people.
With sincere appreciation,
