Wesley Hawkins is the Founder and Director of The Nolita Project. This nonprofit organization provides mentorship, supportive relationships, classes, and community efforts to beautify neighborhoods and provide basic safety for the poor of Baltimore. He is also a kid from the hood, and proud single dad to Elijah - his biological brother, who he adopted after both of Elijah’s parents died of drug-related causes. Hawkins was born in Baltimore to a drug-addicted mother, whose addiction quickly destroyed their family. After spending time in foster care and being taught to read by extended family members at the age of 10, Hawkins went on to work as a prison guard, a trucker, and then to earn his Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice. He hopes that his unique perspective - as someone who was born into some of the most challenging circumstances imaginable, who has worked on both sides of the law, and who has been able to succeed in both business and academia - will bring a fresh perspective to his fellow kids from the hood, and to academics and lawmakers alike.
